Guyanese professional Elsie Harry recently traveled to China where she proudly represented the Caribbean at the 3rd Training Workshop for Self-Media from Latin America and the Caribbean. Harry was honored to be selected as the designated speaker for her cohort during the Opening Ceremony, a role that placed her on stage as one of only two delegates chosen to address the gathering β the other from Latin America.
Her visit also marked a personal achievement as she received an award for her submission to the 3rd βChina-LAC: Close Friendship Obliterates the Distanceβ Short Video Contest. Out of more than 500 entries across the region, only 40 participants were shortlisted, and Harryβs work earned her a spot among this select group.
Though she does not consider herself a social media influencer, Harry embraces digital storytelling as a tool for advocacy, cultural expression, and activism. She has long used her platform to highlight Guyanese culture, promote local artists and artisans, and advocate for social issues.
Reflecting on her role, Harry noted that even when Guyanese audiences may turn a blind eye, βthe world is watching.β She underscored her belief that social media, when used responsibly, remains one of the most powerful tools for amplifying voices and driving change.
